Halo Above Austria

I like halos, and in the mountains you can see them sometimes and in different appearances. This is a typical halo caused by the icy cloud type cirrostratus. The sunlight is reflected by zillions of tiny ice crystals, and as these clouds are stratus clouds (horizontal layering with a uniform base), the layer is quite homogenious. This helps to bring up the full ring of reflection. Additionally, this type of cloud signalizes an approaching warm front bringing rain in the next few hours.

I was lucky the terrain let me change my position to center the halo and the sun to the 2.5 meters high summit cross. The mountains you see below are mainly austrian, on the right side you can see the distant Säntis.

Hope you like my capture!

  1. The scenery is beautiful Wilfried . I like the smooth cloud .

  2. Looks like a polar bear in the halo of the light :-)) ♥♥♥ :-))

  3. Das Bild könnte man sowas mit religiösen Texten aufladen.

    Passt so jedoch besser!

  4. That is a great shot!

  5. Athena Carey – Thank you so much, Athena! Initially, I considered to rework the streaky cloud layer to give it a LE-touch in PS, but I decided not to. I guess the sky would appear "cleaner" and smoother then, but on the other hand, I like the rather harsh structure a lot. 🙂

  6. Paul Turkowski – Thank you Paul! In fact, I "discovered" Vorarlberg in a way for autumn tours. I enjoy to be in a region where I don&39;t know every mountain by name (yet) ;-). Often thought about meeting you there. Would be fun!

  7. I&39;m confident that we will meet once Wilfried Haferland! It would be indeed a fun to go with you on a special photo-walk at the thin air 🙂 I have a few thoughts about some nice peaks you may not know (yet) … we should think about a "talking concrete" Wilfried 🙂

  8. Yes indeed , it was a pleasant snowy weekend at the mountain   :o)
